AMD is a common eye condition and a leading cause of vision loss among people aged 50 and older.
It causes damage to the macula, a small spot near the center of the retina and the part of the eye needed for sharp, central vision, which lets us see objects that are straight ahead.
In some people, AMD advances so slowly that vision loss does not occur for a long time.
In others, the disease progresses faster and may lead to a loss of vision in one or both eyes.
As AMD progresses, a blurred area near the center of vision is a common symptom.
Blepharitis is a chronic, inflammatory disease of the eyelids caused by an overgrowth of normal bacteria living along the lid and the base of the eyelashes.
Blepharitis can occur at any age, but as we age, we make fewer natural antibodies in our tears increasing the likelihood of getting blepharitis.
This overgrowth of bacteria produces a biofilm that traps scurf and debris along the eyelashes and harbors bacterial exotoxins along the lid margin.
These exotoxins penetrate the eyelid tissue causing low-grade inflammation which adversely affects the tear glands, turning down tear production.
Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.
It gives a rejuvenated appearance to the surrounding area of your eyes, making you look more rested and alert.
Upper eyelid surgery can remove excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the upper eyelids.
Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision, can be treated by eyelid lift surgery.
Lower eyelid surgery can correct droopiness of the lower eyelids, showing white below the iris (colored portion of the eye).
This condition may also be known as Ocular Surface Disease (OSD).
Many people, whether they are aware of it or not, suffer from dry eyes.
Dry eye syndrome (DES) is one of the most common yet most under diagnosed conditions affecting the health of the eye.
The complex nature of dry eye can begin as young as 10 or 11 years old and continues throughout a patient's life.
Dry eye syndrome causes more than just discomfort; it can result in permanent damage to the cornea, vision loss, and other problems.
